Szilvásvárad

Our small region includes a valuable area of Northern Hungary. Between the cities of Eger and Miskolc lies the Bükk National Park. It's natural attractions include rock formations, caves, springs, upland meadows, pastures and rare plant and animal life. Here you can find the famous stud of Lippizaner horses that was brought to Szilvásvárad and the Bükk plateau in the 1950's. Traditional festivals of Lippizaner horses and four-in-hand driving competitions are organised in every September here.

The soil of the volcanic slopes below the higher hills is perfect place for vineyard. This is where the grapes for the world famous wines of Eger are grown. The custom of wine making dates back to the 11th century. The area produces white as well as red wines. One of the most famous ones is the deep red Bull's Blood.

Eger is also very famous about it's heroic defenders, who succesfully defended the castle of Eger from the Turkish attack in 1552. Géza Gárdonyi captured the whole scene in his novel: 'Stars of Eger'. This book is still one of the most commonly read by youngs in Hungary. You can still visit the Castle of Eger where this unbelievable success of a tiny number of people happened.

Eger has been the center of the Church since St Stephan's. The catholic Cathedral is still a breathtaking sight to visit.
